FARMORIAH in GUINEA

Farmoriah village is situated in “Basse Guinée”, south-west part of Guinea-Conakry. Farmoriah belongs to the Administrative Authority (Préfecture) of Foricariah and the ethnic group “Soussous” is in majority in this area.

Located 10 kms from the border of Republic of Sierra Leone, life is quiet, bathed by “Méllacorée” river and protected since centuries by the famous baobab tree called there “Kondé”.

Farmoriah and Foricariah are two places which are friendly called “rivals” for the reason that they are both established by the same family in the area called “Moriah”.
The story of Farmoriah populating corresponds to the saga of the families who are currently living in Moriah. Indeed, all Soussous from the “Basse Guinée” are descendants from the Malinké dynasty of Mandé, north part of the country. The introduction of Islam religion in the north part of Guinea was subject to wars which ended up with migrations of populations. Thus, the patriarchs Fodé Katibi TOURE, Fodé Aboubacar YANSANE and Fodé Boubacar FOFANA left Houmi, their “home country” with their families to move towards west side. Due to the importance of the families and future allies, the migrants became dominant in the places on their way. In example, Fodé Katibi TOURE, married Mangaba Wodé, a daughter of Manga Mambi, the king of Tambakha; the dowry was composed of 7 slaves, 2 horses, 16 beefs, 14 sheeps and 500 gold-francs! After the death of king Manga Mambi, Fodé Katibi TOURE and some of his children moved further, conquered many places and renamed them with their own first names: Mambia, Friguia, Yanguia, Foricariah (distortion of “Fodé Katibiya”, which means in Soussou language “Fodé Katibi’s home”), Farmoriah (distortion of “Famoroya”, which means in Soussou language “Famoro’s home). In the meantime, the “YANSANE” took definitely place in the villages of Laya and Taïgbé.

How did the migrants find and name Foricariah and Farmoriah?
  • As indicated above, Foricariah is a distortion of “Fodé Katibiya”. According to a legend, the highly skilled Fodé Aboubacar FOFANA predicted to the TOURE families that while hunting in an area, they will kill a hind and the very place where the hind will fall will become their final landing point; then, they must build a mosque and a village along the “Mellacorée” (distortion of “Melikhouré” which means “River of the tree" called in Soussou language “Meli”) river. The village built was called “FORICARIAH”.
  • As indicated above, Farmoriah is a distortion of “Famoroya”, Famoro being the first name of the funder, big hunter and one of the sons of Fodé Katibi. Accompanied by his brother Boundiala TOURE, Famoro went hunting about 20 Kms from Foricariah, along the river and killed an animal near a village called “Taïgbé” located at the other side of “Mellacorée” river. He gave a leg to the sovereign of Taïgbé” and introduced himself. He then asked the permission to set up on one side of the river; the sovereign accepted. Famoro then married two women called Méma and Mama Yalan. He had one son (Demba) with Méma, and three sons (Yalan Maligui, Yalan Toumani and Yalan Mamoudou) with Mama Yalan. This then Five “Nobility Houses” of Farmoriah are called as follows: BOUNDIALAYA (from the first name of Famoro’s brother), MEMADEMBAYA (from the first name of one of Famoro’s sons), YALANMALIGUIA (from the first name of one of Famoro’s sons), YALANTOUMANIA (from the first name of one of Famoro’s sons) and YALANMAMOUDOUYA (from the first name of one of Famoro’s sons). Two descendents of those “Houses” got married in 1942 and had several children and among them, your servant, Kémoko TOURE who is the Chief Editor of this website!
